Eggy I-V
Why a Ram? No one knows for sure. Some say it’s because the Ram is the symbol in our coat of arms. Others say the symbol represents aries, Eggerton Ryerson’s horoscope. Whatever the reason, the Ram has become the mascot and continues to lift Ryerson’s spirit, and inspire them to kick ass in anything and everything they do.
The ram first appeared at the historic hockey game between Ryerson and Waterloo. It shocked everyone. The group became a hit as all of Ryerson glorified the idea, and the United Rams were established … in secrecy.
Having a live animal as the mascot caused much controversy and political spark as authorities tried to ban it. Howard Kerr, President of Ryerson at the time, took notice of the animal and encouraged the idea. He was named Eggy I and became the official mascot of Ryerson until 1992. Eggy V was the last as the Humane Society took notice and banned live animals to be mascots for institutions.
Eggy was ‘ram’napped many times by rival schools. U of T stole Eggy and returned him covered in blue paint (their school colours). This was the starting point of Ryerson’s rivalry with U of T.
Long live the Ram.
